Deduct Salary for Being Late, Workers Forced to Eat Inside Tunnels – 200 High Speed Railway Workers On Strike
The construction company issued an announcement informing all workers at the construction site for High-Speed Railway in Cheung Wing Road, Kwai Chung, that if one is late for 5 minutes, 30 minutes of paid will be forfeited; and if one is late for 15 minutes, an hour paid will be forfeited; whilst leaving work early an hour paid will be deducted. In response to the announcement, the workers went on strike at 7am this morning. The Construction Site Workers General Union of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions is currently on-site assisting over 200 on strike workers. Workers also said that the new head of the site also forces all workers to have their meals inside the underground tunnels and makes workers to work overtime.
The High-Speed Railway runs under Tsuen Wan’s Yau Ma Hom Resite Village, Da Chuen Ping Village, Sheung Kwai Chung Village, Cheung Shan Estate and Sam Tung Uk Resite Village. It also goes pass under Castle Peak Road of Kwai Tsing District. A ventilation facility will be built on Wing Yip Street.
